Well, it's getting late in the pre-season to order bees if one wants a buzzing hive in April.
It's
always good to remember that if you lost your colony to a bad winter
you can replace them if you act fast. I discovered last year that ordering
bees is a tough business. When ordering in Illinois it's a good idea to get step up with a Bee Keeping Club ... see my first couple posts for clubs in the Chicago area. They usually do a group buy and even pick up the bees from the supplier. It's a great deal considering gas prices these days. You need to do this in January or February - after that you will have trouble getting bees without having to buy hive equipment and other crap.

ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply - what's a few months anyway. cdogrun, yes the bees were installed the first week of May and have been buzzing away. I will let you know how the first harvest goes. I will only be taking a couple frames worth of honey just in case this turns out to be another warm winter.
ReplyDeleteAs for you "Ronnie" I'm breeding a special swarm of super stinging bees just to throw at you face. But now that I think of it your 'ugly' force-field might block even those mean stingers.

I forgot to mention, Dadant was extremely helpful and the bees are turning out to be super friendly and healthy.
ReplyDeleteFor all of you bee buyers ... If you live in Illinois or Wisconsin I highly recommend you use them as your supplier next year. Everything went down without a hitch and it was 100% professional. I just can't stress how important it is to get your order in before March. After that it is difficult to find a seller that still has bees for sale.
